I don't have enough time right now to write my own little bio on these owls, so here's a link until I get that together for you guys! [link]
This is Tuukkuli (Ohlone word for "Great Horned Owl"). He has been with our zoo for 6 years after being struck by a pellet gun as a wild owl. He has permanent wing damage and is not able to fly. He is an amazingly important part of our Education Department, teaching others about owls, nocturnal animals, senses, birds in general, and what happens when wildlife and people overlap.
I am thrilled with this picture. In hindsight, a slightly larger DOF would have been better, but man... he is just stunning.
This is a beautiful photograph, it is sad to know what happened to him but at least he has a good home at your zoo and is part of the education department.
I always love owl photos, no matter how simple they are they always seem to have a significant amount of emotion in their posture and eyes. (Not to mention always seem to be looking down on you as if they are better )
I love the angle of this photo and how he is crooked in the shot it gives it a sort of questioning look and curiosity. I also really like that his ears are cut off. I think sometimes owl shots (especially great horned owls) rely too heavily on the beautiful of just the owl. By cutting them off I think you managed to draw attention away from that wonderful feature and put it more on the feeling a viewer gets from the photo.
